Prices usually start at around £20-£25 for a small frame (depending on the wood and style) and mirrors usually start at around £40-£50 (again, depending on the wood and style). Please bear in mind mirrors can be very expensive and this cost of raw materials has to be factored into the price. The following pictures give you an example of the style and type of woods available. I generally think of my frames in 2 categories;
Reclaimed frames - mostly made in either Oak or Elm, the majority of which was rescued from the 130 yr old barn I was lucky enough to live and work in. This wood offers a patina and figuring that can't be found in any new wood.
Some of this wood is so dark it is similar to Bog Oak and the finish it takes is simply stunning.
This Oak to the right was a lucky find, being highly figured (what the French would term;) Silver-Streak Oak.
Details like the contrasting sapwood on the Burr Oak picture frame (below right) or the shelf for night lights being fitted at the customers request on the Oak mirror (below left) offer more character and personality than the average small frame.
Speciality frames - These are frames that are made from a single hand-picked log which is carefully cut to reveal the finest grain the wood has to offer. The log is destined for the frame alone and great care has to be taken to work with this green wood without it splitting, twisting & warping. I always have a selection of rare & unusual woods available for these frames including Yew, Cherry, Plum, Apple & Acacia - to name just a few and am happy to either use wood supplied by yourself, or order in from a specialist if requested. If you have any questions, queries or comments please feel free to contact me - or have a look at our Folksy or Etsy shops to see any frames that are currently available.
