Furniture

“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” ― William Morris
I aim to acheive these fundamental values in every piece of furniture I create and this attribute coupled with an ethos and sympathy towards the origin of the wood results in very individual pieces of furniture with a lot of warmth & character. Although I sometimes create matching sets every piece is unique, even if 2 pieces are built to identical plans I aim to keep enough of the natural shape and feel of the wood to make each piece completely different in it's final appearance.

Each piece is built using traditional fixing methods, only wood is used to hold wood together - no glue, screws or nails are relied upon in construction and this medieval design of building furniture produces joints which are not only immensely strong but are also highly decorative and add a visual impact by drawing the eye to the detail of the wood. This method of green wood working is more commonly seen in the mortise & tenon joints and large dovetails found in the massive timber frame buildings that have stood for centuries.

Because such a large amount of effort goes into selecting and working with the grain to achieve the finest results an equally proportionate amount of time goes into finishing the wood, my pieces are finished to a standard far beyond that of the average furniture. I believe such beautiful wood deserves to have every detail drawn from its surface for display and as such it is sanded and polished to a standard usually only found in the highest quality marble polishing shops.
Despite this high level of finish and artistic approach to the wood, each and every piece is intended for functionality and suitable for daily use which, if treated correctly, should last a lifetime.
